American Heroes: Stories of Service

Joseph J. Swartout managed multi-million-dollar logistics operations, ensured the safety of countless troops, and played a key role in returning fallen heroes to their loved ones. Since retiring, Joe has continued to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter, scout leader, and the founder of Freedom Fields, a non-profit that helps veterans and first responders cope with PTSD.

From bringing World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial, to helping build a local veterans memorial, Martin H Schroeder has spent his life giving back to those who served. He is a hero whose legacy of service and kindness will never be forgotten.

After serving 12 years on active duty as a chemical specialist, Marc Gray faced unimaginable challenges, including surviving a devastating IED blast in Iraq that left him with life-threatening injuries. His heart of a warrior continues to guide his mission to support and uplift his brothers and sisters in arms.

An Army veteran and Gold Star Mom, Diana Pike joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1975 and served in Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) for over a decade. Despite profound loss, Diana remains a pillar of strength for her daughter, showcasing the true sacrifice and devotion of a veteran and mother who has given so much for her country.

As a member of the 173rd Airborne’s Chosen Company, Jacob Sones faced relentless enemy fire during the Battle of Wanat. For his extraordinary valor, Jacob was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, a testament to the heroism that saved lives that day and honored the memory of the nine paratroopers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Having served in Israel, Rhodesia, and South Africa, Dave Barr faced unimaginable challenges, including the loss of both legs in 1981. Yet, his resilience and dedication led him to establish the Patriot Express Foundation, devoted to supporting disabled veterans.

Retiring as a decorated First Sergeant, Victor C. Wise III's legacy continues to inspire others. As a first responder after Hurricane Katrina, a leader during a year-long deployment to Guantanamo Bay, and a Bronze Star recipient for his tour in Iraq, Vic’s unwavering dedication earned him the respect of all who served by his side.

Throughout a distinguished career as an Air Force loadmaster, combat camera team leader, and Public Affairs chief, MSgt Joseph Kapinos faced the dangers of war zones. He has witnessed the sacrifices made under the stars and stripes and remains committed to honoring those who gave everything for freedom.

A Vietnam War hero, Richard Halperin’s military service was marked by resilience and sacrifice, shaping not only his own character but inspiring those around him. Even after his time in the army, he remained deeply committed to honoring his fellow servicemen, dedicating countless days to placing flags at the cemetery in their memory.
