Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Christopher Cochrane, a dedicated US Navy veteran and a member of the courageous few among his generation who chose to serve their country.
Story submitted by Susan Billeter: “Christopher Cochrane, my son and former US Navy sailor, is deserving of a beautiful Allegiance flag because he represents the dwindling population of young Americans who are choosing to serve their country by volunteering to join the US Armed Forces. Christopher enlisted in the Navy in 2013 and served 8 years as an ABE on the decks of aircraft carriers. One deployment, he served in the Arabian Sea, and participated in the launch and recovery of countless aircraft during project "Enduring Freedom". Later, he continued to serve and really, STRUGGLE, through two years during the Covid outbreak. Sadly, this is where he and hundreds of ignored sailors wrestled isolation, shut downs and loneliness. My once enthusiastic, hard working sailor, was told to remain in his barracks, working only 2 days per week, MRW shut down gyms, pools, activities, socialization and trips off base were prohibited. They were ignored, their needs went unanswered and many fell into depression, feeling a loss of purpose. Once strong sailors began to fall during this peace time pandemic, victims to death by their own hand - my son witnessed 7 of his own shipmates succumb to this cruel and mishandled "attack". My family was a lucky one. My son was Honorably Discharged, but returned home a damaged soul. My pride and respect for him hasn't diminished; his spirit is fallen, not crushed. He had offered this country his service, his integrity, his ALLEGIANCE and returned home with a need to fight to regain his life. Christopher gets better every day and has been a shining example of the many young people who too, have answered the call to serve!"
Thank you, Christopher, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
