Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.

We’re honored to share the story of Joseph J. Swartout, a dedicated hero who has selflessly served his country in both the US Navy and the US Army, making countless sacrifices along the way.

Story submitted by Marti Baird: "Joe served in both the US Navy and the US Army. In the US Navy from June 1993 to Nov 2005, he was an Aviation Ordinanceman as well as Military Police. Joe also served as a Military Criminal Investigator, investigating crimes against the US Government and its assets. He also served as a US Navy Small Arms Marksmanship Instructor. Joe deployed 3 times while serving in the US Navy. His military career not yet complete, Joe then went on to serve in the US Army from Nov 2005 to March 2015 where he served as a Program Manager/Senior Operations Manager serving as the Senior Joint Munitions Officer for the US Forces Afghanistan Headquarters, where he managed over $500M in ammunition and explosives inventories. He provided oversight of all associated logistics operations and explosive safety programs throughout the country. He was accountable for logistics accounts of over $111M. Joe also developed and conducted professional development and safety training events to ensure operations safety and accountability were maintained. Joe also served as a Mortuary Affairs Officer for 10 years and assisted in the return of 218 service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Joe deployed 4 times with the US Army.

A man with a heart for service, since military retirement Joe has served on the fire departments and rescue squads for the communities in which he calls home. He has also served in various volunteer leadership positions with local Scouting America units. Always trying to find ways to give back to others, and as just one of thousands of veterans with PTSD, Joe has also started a non-profit organization, called Freedom Fields, in New Kent, VA. Freedom Fields assists veterans, first responders and first receivers, as well as their families, with PTSD and compassion fatigue through a variety of services. Joe is a loving and devoted father of 4, husband of 29 years and a devoted friend to all he meets. He is also a man of great faith. Joe is a very well-known and very respected member of the New Kent community and his humble and steadfast service to others is noteworthy. Joe deserves this nomination for his service to the United States, the sacrifices he made with his family during his long military career, his selfless leadership of others, his compassion for veterans and first responders and his willingness to serve others no matter what the need or when."

Thank you, Joseph, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
