Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Daniel C. Poling, a WWII veteran and true patriot whose life embodies sacrifice and resilience.
Story submitted by Frank W Smyth: "Danny joined the Navy at the beginning of WW2 owing the death of his cousin MM2 Samuel Gemienhardt who died onboard the USS Arizona during the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor. During WW2 Danny was a Gunner's Mate and served in convoys in the North Atlantic; In the Mediterranean during the Anzio Landings and finally in the Pacific during the Battle for the Philippines. Having survived WW2 he went on to serve for 20 years as a Gunner's Mate serving on three different Battleships during the Korean War. Danny is now 101 years old, and while a little deaf from being inside the turrets or standing in the open manning the guns in the ships he served in during two wars, he remains one of the few remaining patriots from the greatest generation who gave so much for their country and democracy throughout the world."
Story submitted by Sharon Cone: "Daniel Poling, my “Big Daddy,” is a 101-year-old WWII/Korean War veteran. He served in both the Pacific and European warfronts in WWII, he served on the Big Mo and at the Battle of Anzio. He enlisted in the war after his cousin was lost on The Arizona with the bombing of Pearl Harbor (where he remains interred to this day). Big Daddy is our family Hero!♥️🇺🇸💙"
Thank you, Daniel, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
